Give Your Fund-a-Need the Love It Deserves

8/05/2026

For many organizations, the best opportunity to increase event revenue does not require more guests, more auction items, or a bigger ballroom.

It may simply require giving the Fund-a-Need more attention.

An Opportunity Without the Usual Limits

Also known as a paddle raise or cash appeal, the Fund-a-Need is one of the most efficient and cost-effective fundraising opportunities of the evening.

There is no item to secure, no package to fulfill, and no limit to the number of guests who can participate. Every paddle raised increases the total while directly supporting the organization’s mission.

Yet the Fund-a-Need is often given far less planning time than the auction, décor, entertainment, or other event details.

That is a missed opportunity.

The Best Paddle Raises Are Carefully Built

A successful Fund-a-Need may feel effortless in the room, but it rarely is.

Behind that seemingly spontaneous moment is thoughtful preparation: identifying prospective donors, choosing the right giving levels, developing a compelling case for support, preparing speakers, and securing early commitments that help build momentum.

The strongest organizations do not simply find a place for the Fund-a-Need in the program. They treat it as a primary revenue strategy; and plan accordingly.

Build the Evening Around the Ask

Timing matters. Storytelling matters. The transition into the appeal matters.

Guests should understand why they are being asked to give, what their contribution will make possible, and why their support is needed now. The program should lead naturally toward the moment rather than making the Fund-a-Need feel like one more item to get through before dessert.

When those pieces come together, the Fund-a-Need becomes more than another line in the run of show. It becomes the emotional and financial centerpiece of the evening.

Organizations often look for ways to raise more by adding more. Sometimes, however, the better strategy is to invest more intentionally in the opportunity already in front of them.

In our next three posts, we will explore C2Auctions’ Three P’s for creating a stronger, more successful Fund-a-Need and the work that should begin long before the first paddle goes up.
